Let Me Be Like Water by S K Perry was the Brighton City Reads Choice for 2019. It's about 23 year old Holly, who moves to Brighton after the death of her boyfriend Sam. She soon meets Frank, a retired gay magician who introduces her to an eclectic mix of people who help her come to terms with her grief. I loved that it was set in Brighton - the author did a great job of writing about it (I've lived in Brighton in the past and still live close by.) It's a sad story...the whole book is about Holly's grief but the power of friendship is an overriding theme too. Really enjoyed this. Yesterday @making_up_junk and myself had an unexpected day to ourselves so took ourselves off to Chartwells, which was Winston Churchill's home. I've wanted to go ever since seeing it in The Crown and it was a great place to visit. The house is lovely...there are books everywhere and the grounds are just idyllic! Photographs are of the library, the breakfast room and exterior of the house. Do you like visiting houses of historical figures? Yesterday, for a work thing, I got to visit Oxford University Press. OUP is a department of the University of Oxford and has been involved in printing since the 15th century. One of the most famous books it publishes is the Oxford English Dictionary which was first started in 1884 and finished in 1928! Pictured is a library card catalogue (which I love!), some shelves in the library and a picture of some of the many dictionaries in their archive. Do you like to visit libraries? I work in one but I always likes to see others! And it's Friday! What are you reading this weekend? Yesterday I finished The Little Girl on the Ice Floe by Adelaide Bon. When Adelaide was 9 years old she was raped by a stranger near her home. This memoir tells the story of the psychological problems this left her with. She blocked out the events of that day and it wasn't until her late 20s she came to accept what happened to her. The memoir is mostly told in the third person as if it is about someone else, but in the later part of the book, when the rapist is caught and goes to trial, the narrative switches to the first person again. A strong, brave and shocking memoir, this is an important read, especially in relation to the #metoo movement. Thank you to @quercusbooks and @katya.reads for inviting me on the social blast!
